Mercury-Containing Waste URL-2M
Processing Technologies Overview
Mercury-containing waste presents a significant environmental hazard and requires specialized processing and neutralization technologies. KS Group LLC provides enterprises and organizations with services for processing and disposal of mercury-containing waste.
Main Types of Mercury-Containing Waste
- Fluorescent mercury lamps (up to 100 million units fail annually)
- Thermometers and other mercury-containing medical devices
- Mercury-containing instruments from school, educational, and research laboratories
- Galvanic cells
- Mercury-containing electrical equipment
Main Directions of Mercury Waste Disposal
- Reagent demercurization — treatment with solutions of ferric chloride, potassium permanganate, iodine-based preparations, sodium sulfide, and others
- Vacuum distillation — waste distillation with cryogenic condensation of mercury vapors to obtain metallic mercury
- Thermal demercurization — thermal processing of waste to produce stuppa (crude mercury)
- Counter-flow purging method — producing mercury concentrate through counter-current gas flow
The vacuum distillation technology is implemented on the URL-2M installation, which produces metallic mercury with a purity of at least 95%. The process includes loading waste into a chamber, heating under vacuum, cryocondensation of mercury vapors, and unloading demercurized waste.
